August Gardening Tips

August Gardening Tips
  • Deadhead bedding plants and repeat-flowering perennials, to ensure continuous flowering.
  • Check to see if the soil in your containers and hanging baskets is damp, if not water accordingly.
  • Regularly check water levels in your pond and water features and top up as required
  • It is essential to Prune and shape Wisteria in early August after it has flowered.
  • Weed and dig over borders regularly to ensure weeds don’t have time to set
  • Be sure to water plants early in the morning so the foliage can dry off before the summer sun sets in.
  • Harvest any fruit which is ripe and ready.  Cherries, Plums, Peaches, Nectarines and Apricots should all be ripe now!
  • Stake tall or top-heavy plants or flowers to prevent wind and rain damage
  • Plant autumn flowering bulbs, such as Colchicums, Sternbergia and Nerines, in pots and borders
  • Use secateurs to remove any suckers around the base of trees and roses.
  • Clear weeds from cracks in paving and driveways before they get established
  • Feed soil in any planters or beds with liquid or slow release plant food.
